The Arts Curriculum Overview

The Year 7 – 10 Arts curriculum at Darul Ulum accommodates the need to engage, inspire and enrich all students, exciting the imagination and encouraging them to reach their creative and expressive potential. The department provides opportunities for students to learn how to create, design, represent, communicate and share their ideas, emotions, observations and experiences. Integrating it with other curriculum subjects and following the ‘making’ and ‘responding’ strands, Art is taught via the following subjects: Drama, Visual Art and Media Art. Throughout years 7 to 9, students will explore and learn from advertising to drama and different art styles to photography concepts.

Year 7

Integrating Art with other subjects such as, Humanities & Science, students will make artworks that communicate ideas and intentions. In Visual Art, students will challenge their making and responding abilities to inspire ideas and calligraphy to create thoughtful, guided responses to arts expression. Media Art explores the use of advertisement strategies and using various types of media to demonstrate these strategies. Drama (or performing arts) will suit students who enjoy vocal and movement skill. Students develop an awareness of a variety of theatrical conventions by watching videos.

Year 8

Continuing the integration with other subjects, students will continue building on the knowledge and skills gained from year 7 Art following the Making and Responding strands. In Visual Art, students will advance their making and responding abilities to further engage their understanding of Styles of Art. Media Art will further expand on student creativity to take advantage of craft using recycled material and also exploring cultural art. Drama will continue to build on their knowledge by understanding the dramatic elements used in performing arts.

Year 9

Students will study various topics in the societal, cultural and historical contexts. Visual Art further expands on students exploring and responding abilities as well as demonstrating various styles of art. Media Art will involves the use of industry standard technology, such as, Adobe Suite and Windows Movie Maker.
