Year 10 chemistry and biology students were invited to attend a ‘Shampoo making’ workshop at La Trobe University. Students analysed the ingredients in commercial shampoo and visited concepts such as hydrophobic, hydrophilic, surfactants and polarity. Students conducted a risk assessment and understood the need for rigorous testing of commercially available products. When making their own coloured shampoo, students added preservative and extra salt to thicken their shampoo. The excursion gave students a snapshot into VCE chemistry and experimental design.
